Online games are games that are played by using a computer and a network. The player must have a personal computer and an internet hook up. These games can be as simple as a text based game, to a game that contains complex graphics, to virtual worlds that have a population of many joint online players at the same time. Online games also can be connected to social networking sites, so they can also become a kind of social activity among online communities. Online games have virtually changed our world, especially among young adults. Browser based pet games are currently very popular among young users.

Online gaming is a technology. A user is able to connect to multi-player games, as well as single player games. Real-time strategy games in their early stages allowed multi-players over a modem or local network. 1st person shooter games became popular in the 1990’s, like Doom. 1980’s arcade games such as Pac-Man and Frogger have been recreated using a Flash plugin on a webpage. Because of the use of Flash and Java, websites can use audio, streaming video, and user interactivity to create on-demand entertainment for online games.

Now online games have World Wide Web support, and players from all over the world can compete together. Cross- platform online play has expanded online gameplay because consoles are becoming more like computers. Browser online games use a web browser as the client. This is possible because of the internet and more sophisticated browsers. Flash and Java applications enable the games to become more complex. These are simply known as Flash games or Java games. Online game governance is bound by the End User License Agreement. Known as EULA, it is usually is not enforced except in large scale gaming.

Popular categories of online games include sports, puzzles, action, fighting, and card games. Arcade, board, and strategy games are other groups. As forms of technology change and become more advanced, so will online games. Look for games to become almost as authentic as actual reality. It is debatable if this is safe within a society, or not. Virtual reality may be great fun, but on the other hand can be very dangerous. The applications in the wrong hands could be disastrous. Role playing should only be carried out to a certain point. Hopefully, game designers will try to find a balance in keeping the fun in online games without making them dangerous if applied in real life.
